Facing closure in April 2006 with the lease expiring, President of the Hawaii Motorsports
Center, Mike Oakland, called to arms several hundred motorsports enthusiasts to participate
in a 3 hour cruise around the State Capitol, President's Day, February 21, 2005.
Hundreds of imports, domestics, hot rods, dragsters, formula racers, go-karts, and bikes were
on display on the Capitol grounds, marked with the letters "HRP" in white shoe polish.
Participants showed their support and the need for a [new] Raceway Park as well as their
opposition to current Recon laws.
Campbell Estate, owner of the property that Hawaii Raceway Park resides on, wants the land
back. Hawaii State government has little to no interest in building a new track or
keeping the existing one.
"If we don't get this thing done we're going to have three new racetracks: H-1, H-2
and H-3," Oakland said.
Thank you to all who showed up and made this cruise a smashing success!
